Legal Hacking
By Phil Longoria and Mike Berio – Hosts of Digital Computer Talk
Most acts of computer hacking are illegal. However, not all hacking is illegal – sometimes, companies hire professional security testers to purposely hack into their systems to determine how safe they are. This is known as penetration testing also called “white-hat hacking” and “ethical hacking”.

Eugene “Gene” Chandler
of Chandler Computer Consultants
Gene Chandler bought his first Laptop computer in 2000. Being a do-it -yourself type, he began to play with and teach himself to work with the Operating System and BIOS settings. He learned to tackle problems one by one as they were encountered. Eventually he met a friend who shared mutual interest in computers through the Veteran’s Administration. This was how Gene began to learn about how to upgrade his laptop so it could grow beyond the basics of a factory stock computer.
While working with newly acquired hardware skills his natural curiosity lead him to explore and learn about an area in technology known as ethical hacking. This pertains to exploring the security of electronic information in computers, and networks.
It wasn’t long before Gene was hooked on Information Technology security. He has an insatiable appetite for working with hardware and software. In 2002 he built his own computer tower after attending a Regional Occupational Program (ROP) class on computer hardware. Class topics included components used to make up a computer, and how to install and repair the Windows Operating System.
Gene enrolled in Mount San Jacinto College in 2004. His curriculum included classes in computer programming and networking. Currently he is attending classes at Cal State University San Bernardino. His major is in computer sciences, and his goal is to become a better Systems and Network Security Administrator.
The host of Computer Talk Radio, Benjamin Rockwell, has been working with computers professionally for years. Benjamin started off in computers when he was a pre-teenager, and computer selection was small. His first class in computing was on a Commodore Vic 20, and he hasn’t stopped working with computers since. Along the way he became proficient in the Apple II series, a wide range of TRS-80’s, and other Commodore systems.
After getting married, he discovered Bulletin Board Systems (a type of precursor to the Internet as we know it), and became so fascinated with the concept that he set up his own BBS. A friend offered him a job as a field technician in 1990, and Benjamin hasn’t stopped since.
While he casually refers to himself as a computer nerd, he doesn’t come across as the stereotypical obsessed nerd with a pocket protector. Instead, he just seems like someone who is eager to help others. From being a field technician and help desk technician, to being a specialist in various fields, all the way to having spent over 8 years as Information Services Director for various small companies, and a computer consultant for hundreds of individuals and small companies, Benjamin has seen his share of computer problems.
Benjamin has years of hands-on experience with computers, and a passion for learning new things and teaching them to others. He works to ensure that he’s operating on the same wavelength as the people he talks to, and works to develop friendships at the same time. Benjamin’s polite nature, patience and understanding come from having been in the shoes of the new user on many occasions. With his easy going nature, he comes to the rescue and helps people see how their computer can work for them.
Benjamin's background includes a wide variety of technical roles, from helping people turn on their computers, and building computer systems for his clients, to conducting training classes, network troubleshooting, and database programming. Whether he’s developing a website, configuring a router, or tweaking a server, he excels at making things work. Everyone with computers has problems with them, and he specializes in making sure their computers are running as well as his.
Benjamin lives in Southern California near some of the headquarters of the biggest names in the computer industry with his wife and son.

Felipe “Phil” Longoria -
Phil is a self certified Jack of all trades based in Whittier, California. Starting in the early 80’s Phil began working on a Commodore Vic 20 that had no hard drive, it didn’t even have a monitor, it used a television set!. He would manually type in page after page of code just to be able to play the video games that were published in a computer magazine in the hopes that the codes were entered correct to play his video game. Thatstarted a 30 year passion in the computer and tech field. If it runs on solar, battery, electric or wind up you better believe he will be talking about it.
Starting with DOS all the way through today’s Windows 7, Phil works hard to stay on top of the ever changing world of computer operating systems. As hardware changes have gone from the days of 286 computers to the new Quad Core systems, Phil understands the hardware dynamics and the end user has different needs.
In the beginning of 2000, Phil went to work for a sub contractor of a major telecom company installing microwave antennas and phone systems while training people in 3 states. He also has an extensive background in the restaurant field working as a restaurant consultant to help implement P.O.S. systems, networking, and wi-fi installations.
